What a first visit looks like
A first evaluation is unhurried and takes place in person. For adults, it includes about two hours of face-to-face time: a full hour with the practice’s therapist and a full hour with Dr. Shapiro.
Evaluations for children and teens have three parts: an hour with the parents, an hour with the child or teen, and an hour with Dr. Shapiro and the whole family together. In all, that is about three hours across the three sessions.
It helps to bring a photo ID, a list of your current medications, any previous psychiatric or psychological records, a list of your concerns or questions, and contact information for your other providers. If you cannot gather everything, the office can work with whatever you have.
How an adult evaluation unfolds
- Rating scales are sent ahead of time, so there is a structured baseline before you arrive
- One hour with the therapist, who takes detailed written notes
- The therapist and Dr. Shapiro talk everything through together before he sees you, so you are not repeating your story
- One hour with Dr. Shapiro, who reads back what he learned so you can add or correct anything, explains the possible diagnoses in plain language, and walks through the treatment options
- You decide together how to proceed and leave with a plan and a backup plan
- Your next appointment is scheduled before you go; most patients are seen about once a month
Payment, insurance, and video visits
The practice is out-of-network. You pay at the time of your visit, the office provides a superbill, and, as a courtesy, it submits claims to your insurance company on your behalf twice a month. HSA and FSA payment is accepted. Fees are discussed on your first phone call, before anything is scheduled.
Secure, HIPAA-compliant video visits are available, which can help when travel, weather, or schedules are challenging. Initial evaluations are held in person.
If the Cincinnati office is easier for you
